The Temples of Paestum
At just over 30 kilometers south of here lies Paestum with its imposing Doric temples, one of the most beautiful cities of ancient Magna Grecia, and considered worldwide heritage by UNESCO.
Goethe, commenting on his Grand Tour in Italy said that “Paestum is not only the last but, I would say, the most splendid image I’ll bring with me back to the north.” Winckelmann, who reached Paestum in 1758, could not help but stand in utter astonishment at the marvels before him which had previously remained buried in, perhaps, oblivion.
Beyond the archaeological area, dominated by majestic Doric temples, one can visit the Archaeological Museum (Museo Archeologico), the Sanctuary of Granato (Santuario del Granato), an early Christian Basilica and the Getsemani. Paestum is also the gateway to the Parco Nazionale del Cliento and Vallo di Diano national park, also considered a treasure by UNESCO.
This area, source of inspiration to poets and singers, includes 181,000 hectares of wonders: from the blue sea to mountainous zones, from jewels of hamlets to wild paths that lead to breathtaking scenery in areas of extraordinary biodiversity. Many are the places of art and cultural events which preserve and disseminate the area’s exceptional local products and ancient farming traditions.
